Civil Design, Inc. (CDI) has been shaping the infrastructure of communities and industries for 25 years, growing from a two-person operation in 2000 to a team of more than 20 professionals and interns today. Based in Brookings, CDI has become a trusted name in civil engineering and land surveying with a strong reputation for excellence in transportation engineering, particularly within the railroad industry.
During the ethanol boom of the early 2000s, CDI’s expertise was pivotal in designing rail infrastructure for ethanol refineries and grain facilities across the Upper Midwest. Today, their work spans from Texas to Saskatchewan and Ohio to Idaho, with a portfolio of more than 5,000 completed projects for nearly 2,000 clients. From municipal engineering and bridge design to athletic facilities and land surveying, CDI delivers practical, cost-efficient solutions that turn ideas into results.
CDI’s leadership team reflects the company’s commitment to growth and innovation. CEO Jeffrey Cooley, PE, and Vice President Chris Brozik, PE, both of whom began their careers as CDI interns, now lead the firm with enthusiasm and vision. Under their guidance, CDI has expanded into new areas such as bridge engineering and secured major federal funding for transformative projects, including an $84 million grant for work with the Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern Railroad.
As CDI celebrates 25 years, the firm remains focused on building lasting relationships and delivering high-quality results that drive progress. Their success is a testament to teamwork, strong client partnerships, and a mission rooted in “Shaping Ideas, Engineering Results.” Beyond their project work, CDI also invests in the future of Brookings through their involvement as a Vision Brookings investor, underscoring their commitment to community growth and regional development.
